At the ABC, bias is no sin

The ABC has long been accused of being both anti the Iraq war, and not taking the war on terrorism seriously. The Howard government rightly questioned why ABC news boss John Cameron banned the expression ”our troops in Iraq” but allowed hundreds of other usages of the word “our”.Now Peter Cave and Fran Kelly have let the cat out of the bag.

At the end of Radio National ”AM” on Tuesday March 11, stand-in host Peter Cave back-announced a story about the Catholic church modernising the scope of the “seven deadly sins”. He referred to a story Kelly was about to run on the evident three trillion dollar cost of the wars against terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq. “Now that’s a sin,” Cave said. Kelly agreed.

Memo to Cave, Kelly and the ABC in general. There’s an old saying. Freedom isn’t free. And there’s another old saying about journalists – in public, keep your opinions to yourself. Lest we think you and your employer have an editorial position on an issue.
