Literature Board slashes Quadrant’s grant

The Literature Board of the Australia Council has slashed its annual grant to Quadrant magazine by 30 per cent.

Quadrant editor Keith Windschuttle said the decision to reduce the annual grant from $50,000 to $35,000 was “patently political” and he pointed to the fact that throughout the 11 years of the Howard Government its board appointees never reduced the funding of overtly left-wing publications like Meanjin, Overland and Australian Book Review.

“In fact, those three journals always received more money than Quadrant, even though they carry a fraction of our literary content,” Windschuttle said in a letter to subscribers.

The Quadrant editor said that the entire amount received goes to the writers of the magazine’s literary content – book reviews, poetry, short fiction and articles on literature, film and the arts.

“We have to account for every dollar of this expenditure. The Australia Council does not fund our opinion pieces, political commentary, administration, printing or Quadrant Online.”

Meanjin and Overland, which each publish 4 times a year, receive $50,000 and $60,000 respectively. Quadrant publishes ten issues a year.

Keith Windschuttle is appealing to subscribers to help make up the shortfall.

The magazine recently launched a book publishing arm, Quadrant Books, and has been building its online presence.
