Why we like Tony Abbott

Tom Switzer and Peter Day write:

When we say we like Tony Abbott, we do not mean — as many conservatives do — that we simply think he provides plenty of ideological red meat to the Liberal party faithful. We also mean that we find him a very attractive figure on the Australian political scene. Of course, no one is perfect and the Member for Warringah has his fair share of flaws: he had, to put it mildly, an ordinary political campaign in 2007; he’s been prone to shoot from the hip; and although he is a brilliant orator on his day, he’s read too many speeches since becoming opposition leader. One of us (Switzer) thinks that, like his opponent, he’s deluded about Afghanistan: our Diggers’ presence in this hellhole won’t yield lasting improvements that are commensurate with the investment of Australian blood and treasure. Still, it seems to us that Abbott, judging by his personal, intellectual and moral calibre, combined with his experience, has the makings of a great prime minister.
