Herald Sun columnist and TV presenter Andrew Bolt will launch a new bookon the importance of marriage by federal Liberal frontbencher Kevin Andrews in Melbourne at 11.00 am this Thursday 4 October.

Maybe “I do” – Modern marriage and the pursuit of happiness by Kevin Andrews comes as marriage and family are under constant siege, publisher Connor Court says. Kevin Andrews’ “thoroughly researched new book provides a timely and telling case for making the strengthening of these essential bedrocks of a healthy society a number one priority”.

“The tragedy of the retreat from marriage is not the billions of dollars it costs each year,” writes Kevin Andrews. “It is the personal and emotional trauma which research increasingly indicates affects many children, even into their adulthood; and the consequent diminution of health, educational opportunities, and well being, including the stability of relationships of children whose parents divorced.”

From the publisher’s blurb:

Kevin Andrews highlights those factors which social scientists from all over the world believe benefit or detract from marital success, and examines the ways in which individuals, communities and governments can help to create more successful unions.

The book notes that marriage remains a popular aspiration, but there is a growing divide in western nations. University educated men and women continue to marry at high rates, but marriage among the less educated with fewer assets has declined significantly. A growing marriage gap has opened up in western nations, with the well educated tending to marry each other. The less educated and poorer tend to marry less, but often have children.

In Australia, for example, one in three children are now born out-of-wedlock, a trend observed in many other nations.

Andrew Bolt will launch the book in Melbourne on Thursday. It’s a free event but it is essential to book. Further information about the launch is available here.

More information about the book is available from Connor Court.
