Labor’s local government referendum “unnecessary and dangerous,” IPA says
Giving Canberra more power over local government will weaken Australian democracy, the Institute of Public affairs says in a fact sheet on the Gillard Government’s proposed Local Government Referendum amendment.
The IPA says the change to the Constitution, if passed, will:
• Enable the federal government to micromanage local communities
• Concentrate power in Canberra and reduce democratic control of councils by ratepayers
• Undermine state governments and weaken the Constitution’s system of checks and balances
